Knowing your enemy - Treats and Consequences

Since I was a child the general consensus of people around me, media and even some people from medical background looked at fat as the main culprit for bad health, increasing waist-line and all the problems arising due to overweight bodies.

As I grew old I started noticing the need for more muscle. Coming from an Indian family the diets lacked the daily protein requirement, but since I love science I did some reading and after little digging it was clear that big meals were not as important as small meals having larger protein contents. Bottom line, a new and permanent friend PROTEINS.

Hitting the gym opened my eyes to a variety of issues related to normal modern day food intake and preconception about what, how much and when we should eat. When I started pushing weights I soon realised that I was lacking something in my diet as the body was not picking up as much mass as I expected it to. I dug further and stumbled upon something that had to undo some brainwashing done since childhood, I realised that Fats are equally or more  important for  well-being (more on fats later). So once again I made a new friend FATS.

Modern day media also conveniently ignores micro nutrients. Fats, Proteins and Carbohydrates are our bodies building blocks and are also known as MACRO-NUTRIENTS, everything else like vitamins and minerals can be grouped under MICRO-NUTRIENTS.

Carbohydrates are the fuel for our body, without them we can survive but will lead a very lethargic life. Although when I say that I mean we need slow releasing carbs not refined sugar. So yes carbohydrates are our friends but only the slow release kind.

This leaves only one subset of MACRO-NUTRIENTS and that is refined sugars ( more about types of sugars later )  and yes SUGARS are our real enemy, we all owe a very sincere  apology to FATS.
